The Inpex Browse Basin liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, one of the largest in Australia, has reached 50 per cent completion.
A specialised barge has arrived in Darwin to start laying the 889-kilometre gas export pipeline connecting processing facilities at Blaydin Point near Darwin to the Browse Basin off Western Australia’s Kimberley coast.
The $33 billion project is expected to reach its peak construction phase next year, employing thousands of workers.
Japanese gas company Inpex and its French partner Total say about 8.4 million tonnes of LNG will be produced each year once the project is up-and-running.
A final investment decision on the project was made two-and-a-half years ago.
At the time, Inpex chairman Naoki Kuroda said it would be one of the world’s largest LNG facilities and that gas and condensate reserves in the Browse Basin would last about 40 years.
The first gas from the Blaydin Point plant is expected to be produced in 2016.
