Commercial prawn farmers are hopeful a parliamentary inquiry into northern aquaculture will help drive investment and expansion across the industry.

The inquiry was announced by the Joint Select Committee on Northern Australia yesterday, and will focus on new projects, products, markets and innovation.

The first phase of Myanmar’s Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ) project will be completed and put into commercial operation by June, an official report said on Sunday.

The Zone-A, which occupies nearly 400 hectares in southeast Yangon, has employed 1,936 people. mostly Myanmar people.

The entire facility, which is expected to complete by 2016-17, will create some 40,000 job opportunities, the report said.
