PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has pledged his government’s attention to the Nullinga Dam project, hinting at impending announcements on its progression.
Mr Abbott yesterday told The Cairns Post Nullinga Dam was a priority project, given Cairns was already approaching its water supply limits and was expecting its population to outstrip Townsville’s and Darwin’s by 2050.
“It offers not just the assurance Cairns can continue to expand, but also a lot of opportunities for agriculture and hydropower in the area,” he said.
“I think this is probably the most prospective large dam in Northern Australia, and there will be quite a bit more to say about it in the next few weeks.”Nullinga Dam, southwest of Mareeba, was included in the Government’s Agricultural Competitiveness Green Paper, released last October.
