Tiger Brennan Drive’s transformation continues, with new road works starting today.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the upgrade of the Tiger Brennan Drive is a priority for the Australian and Northern Territory Governments.
“The two-lane single carriageway road currently carries more than 22,000 vehicles a day, and is already at capacity during peak hours,” Mr Truss said.
“With the anticipated growth in traffic in coming years, it is vital that this road is upgraded to keep motorists safe and relieve pressure on other arterial roads, including the Stuart Highway.”
Federal Member for Solomon Natasha Griggs said the Australian Government is investing $70 million to boost the efficiency of the road and cater for long term growth.
“Once completed, this project will reduce traffic delays and ease the frustration of drivers by increasing the road capacity,” Mrs Griggs said
Northern Territory Minister for Transport Peter Styles said construction will include the duplication of nine kilometres of inbound lanes and one additional bridge structure at Hidden Valley.
“There will also be four major intersection upgrades and installation of a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians. Most of the works will be done adjacent to the current road to minimise any traffic impacts,” Mr Styles said.
“This project will also improve investment opportunities for local business in the region through improved productivity on the road.”
The Tiger Brennan Drive duplication is jointly funded, with the Northern Territory Government contributing $33 million.
Major construction on this section is commencing in December 2014, with mobilisation to site of Heavy Rock removal equipment, soft soil mixing equipment and the installation of safety guardrails in locations along the road.
Work packages for various elements will start being advertised in early January with works expected to be complete by mid-2016.
